School can now carry a tune St. John fund-raiser makes new piano possible for school |
Students and staff at St. John the Evangelist Catholic School are playing a whole new tune.
A new piano was blessed at the school on Tuesday.
The new piano replaces one that was 35 years old and was in such bad shape that, "the tuner didn't want to tune it," said Principal Mary Zachary.
Music teacher Nancy Licht said, "It didn't hold a tune anymore, so it wasn't worth the expense."
Last month, the school had its annual dinner and auction and raised nearly $30,000.
The annual fund-raiser pays the bills and is used for salaries and upkeep of the school.
Of that money, $2,800 was raised for the piano. The piano was not on the agenda the night of the auction, but someone mentioned the need for it and within minutes, enough money was raised.
"Various donors donated $250, the rest donated $100. Many of the donors weren't school families," Zachary said.
School officials credit Matt Bechteler, president of Pickle Piano Co., for arranging a price that made the piano affordable for St. John's.
More than 200 people attended the annual dinner and auction where items such as Chicago Bulls tickets and artwork were auctioned off.
Now the school's 226 students can make use of the new piano.
All the children take a form of music and Licht said it is nice to teach the students with something that has better quality.
"It's just like if you want to teach students something, you want to teach them with the best you've got," Licht said.
Licht said the school and the parish will share the piano.
Zachary said the school is excited about its new addition and it will "enhance our music program."
The old piano will be sent away and its parts will be used for other purposes, Licht said.
School officials are already looking forward to next year's dinner and auction on Nov. 4 at the Seville at 700 Barrington Road.
In addition to learning about music, the students are also preparing for a Christmas performance at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. John The Evangelist Church.
